Chronic Prostatitis
Chronic prostatitis afflicts many men, leading to the unnecessary use of multi-day antibiotic treatment. At the doctor's office, a diagnosis is made using the Stamey-Miers method (examination of a sample after massaging the prostate) and only then is antibiotic treatment administered.
Symptoms include:
- Feeling of weight in the perineum
- Frequent, dysuria
- Urgency to urinate and defecate
- Feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder
- Orcheodynia
- Decreased libido
- Erectile dysfunction
- Pain during intercourse
- Premature or painful ejaculation
- Nocturia
- Psychological burden of the patient
Diagnosis will be based on history and clinical examination. Urine culture may not show the cause. Collecting urine after prostatic massage increases the likelihood of finding the organism. Treatment is with antibiotics with a longer duration of treatment of up to 8 weeks to reduce the chance of recurrence. At the same time, the causes that contribute to the creation of urinary tract infections should be investigated.
