Acute prostatitis
Acute prostatitis represents acute urinary tract infection in men. It is accompanied by frequent urination, dysuria, hematuria, foul-smelling urine and possibly high fevers. The diagnosis is made as in acute cystitis, with the difference that in men with co-morbidities and over 55-60 years of age, a bladder ultrasound is also performed to check the residual urine. For residual urine >150ml, it is recommended to place a small caliber urinary catheter which is removed after anorexia. Antibiotic treatment should last 20 days. An α-adrenergic blocker is also administered synergistically.
