Acute cystitis
Acute cystitis occurs mainly in women and is accompanied by inflammation of the bladder usually from colibacillus. Symptoms include dysuria, urinary frequency, suprapubic pain, hematuria, and foul-smelling urine. Acute cystitis is not accompanied by fever. The diagnosis is initially based on the general urine and then on the urine culture. Antibiotics are given empirically on a positive general urine test, which is confirmed by culture results. Along with antibiotics, instructions are given for plenty of hydration (2-3 liters per day), instructions for proper hygiene and sexual behavior and various supplements (eg cranberry juice). Antibiotic treatment of the first or rare episodes of acute cystitis should not exceed 4 days.
